    Hi Marcus Here <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/" alt=";)” title=”Wink” />

I started training at 16 in shotokan , a lot of points fighting , I was hooked from the moment I started , Initially because I couldnt , and then later because the could`nts got bigger <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/" alt=":)” title=”Smile” />

found a lot of questions along the way , not many answers , was Lucky enouh to attend seminars by Patrick McCarthy , he not only had answers but encouraged questions , the path of heresy was established .

tried lots of things , lots of dabbling , some back yard judo , boxing , cross training more so than taking up other styles , always wanting to build on the foundation .

Stumbled onto the Uechi froum while investigating the style , I was searching for the polar opposite of karate styles o Shotokan … I think i found it . Van was the best , welcoming and real , and he was one of those high rank guys , but here ws a high rank guy saying what got me in trouble , from the start he showed character , and he`s become a huge influence and Great Friend .

Did Shotokai in London on an O/E trained a lot wih a few folks here and there , got more by training with the unorthodox .

Headed back To NZ , back to the shotokan , more cross training/dabbling , moe interest in this strange style , and more importantly met some great guys In canada online , the usuall suspects , or maybe the gang of five 😆

Rick , was having a camp ….. I was getting bored , Laird encouraged me to do it ……. :karate::huh:

Organised a work permit , Jumped on a plane , a couple addreses and no real plan , I lucked out , my instincts were good .

Found this crazy style , with practitioners more eccentric than I was:P , didnt beleive anything at face value , knew when Rick blasted me with a shoken the first night that these guys were ok <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/" alt=":D” title=”Big Grin” />

Had a great camp with great people , incredibly open and welcoming , a day and I was part of the Family .

The instructors were awesome , the students amazing .

I remember Dave Chows camp/class as being probably the only one I felt even barely familiar , thinking he could be a hardcore shotokan guy with his physical approach .

met Laird and were kept from training with him for the whole camp , He took the strange foreigner back to Banff , and I think Rick was taking odds on how long it was before someone got broken .

started out on the most difficult and frustrating learning experience of My life …..

I was right , opposite ends of the spectrum , it would be probably 2 years before I could even pretend I wasnt breaking the hip .

Laird taught me more than I think anyone has in martial arts , I had the will , but Laird taught me Intent , he let me argue with him constantly on mechanics , and usually we were both right (and both wrong) , I fell In love with the Rockies , With Uechi , and Laird let me into his family , the Banff Sifu is one hell of a guy words cant suffice .

karate wise I had the Bug , I couldnt let it go until I made the mechanics mesh .

My biggest influences are Rick and Laird and Van in the Uechi world , Jim Maloney is probably the most someone has ever influenced me who I have not met .

Patrick McCarthy has had a large influence , but beyond the individuals my biggest influences are now styles .

Uechi , Muay Thai , Boxing , FMA , Shotokan , Enshin etc etc

the list well would be ridiculous , and I dont think i`ve even got to the cross training aspect , there just the ones that are the same .

But my foundation now is Uechi , and everything else just fits into it .

    Hey I only do two of em <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/" alt=";)” title=”Wink” />

and I dont know why but Kanshiwa drives me nuts ……

I think it`s the (imagined) similarity with the Heian kata pattern .

Having said that I love Uechi kata !!!

    I agree Rick

Drills and systems usually were designed to impart attributes .

Often performance of the drill becomes the goal , and the attribute development becomes secondary … In some cases forgotten .

The goal must be to remain focused on the attributes .

if the drills not changing/working or evolving then neither are you .

testing and upping the pressure till its as close as real as we can make it has to be the goal , in martial focussed training
