I dont think its about defending the belt , its about having some character and honour , and knowing you have the skills and have done the work to deserve it .

No one should have any problem defending it or putting there stuff out there on the line if there at that level .

And if your not there , you dont fricken deserve it .

Rick , evolution indeed , but circular too , keeps bringing you back to the same places , with different understanding , to do battle with concepts youd thought youd left behind .

if going deeper is anything , its just going back and starting again with the lessons of the last exploration .

Youve got to be prepared to pick up the ball and run with it , get it all wrong and start again .

I think the point is missed , the grade wasnt for winning , but the skils and atttitude demonstrated

no different to any other grading .

but heck winning wouldnt hurt in the skills demonstration department would it ?

I couldnt agree more really , I do think a test as a right of passage is valid , and can be cool

But a true champion has usually already acheived the levels that the ranks often only aspire .

I think your missing the point Neil , its not about it being bragging rights , its about having the actual martial ability to say your deserved of such rank .

If you cant back it up , you simply dont deserve to say you can .

you should be able to prove it .

this isnt pc , but personally I give the disabled a bit of slack when regarding there physical abilitys .

I apply similar concepts to the aged that are struggling

Heck there are things I dont expect women to be able to do in contrast to myself (that might hurt me :lol::lol:)

and heck little people get cut slack too

BUT ….. that does not mean there shouldnt be reality based expectations for everyone .

the problem being when ou excuse things the slippery slope comes in , we have capable , able folks that just plain stink because the slack is fair to widespread .

Someone whos ability has deteriated because of age and or injury/health , is not the same as someone who never had it .

One has wisdom , respect , knowledge , the other just demands it .

heck there are always going to be times when a higher belt will get beaten by a lower rank .

there are many things apart from skill in a confronation .

However it should be he exception and not the rule , I think all were talking about here is the fact that ranks should be about ability , something seriously lacking these days .

if someoens good enough here good enough , if there not there not , it shouldnt come down to money or attendance , or grand poobah ass kissing , it should come down to ability

BJJ IMHO in general hasnt lost sight of this yet .
