What format would you like it in Rick – email?
hereticaMemberRick I think the new marketing approach is very good indeed. I like that it is succinct, and clearly targets the groups of people who are going to get most from your stuff. Its sad that the Uechi-ryu community won’t embrace a different angle but others may be more open minded. I’d be happy to write a testimonial it its of any help at all.
hereticaMemberI like it.
hereticaMemberMy Ashihara instructor had quite a good business but he had to work hard at it and provide a lot of options. Most of his new students came from word of mouth. He created an excellent dojo space in an old unused movie theatre with good street signage. He taught traditional Ashihara karate to groups of 10-20 students three or four times a week, plus a two or three kick-boxing classes. There were two “little Ninja” classes and one class of Tai Chi. He may do more stuff now. He rented out a training space to a BJJ instructor, ran regular MMA fight nights and weekend training camps from time to time. And he also did personal training. On the plus side – formidably fit and strong, on the downside – family life constantly compromised. He’s made it work by providing a really wide range of options.
Systema is interesting. Our instructor would love to be able to teach full time but there just aren’t enough interested or committed students despite a strong international structure, websites etc He says he has over 250 people who have emailed him, sometimes often and over a period of time, but who have never once shown up to give it a try. So its growing, but slowly. Loren doesnt make a living but he does make some income from it which helps to fund his own ongoing training. No compromises here.
So its hard to have a thriving school even with good credibility.
hereticaMemberYes, I’m still out there! Just read all the posts to get up to speed. Some really difficult issues to be sure. I have now trained reasonably seriously in three styles – Go Kan Ryu karate, Ashihara Karate, Uechi-Ryu Pangwinoon FEUR, and Systema. All have quite different approaches to marketing, syllabus structure and training methods, and varying degrees of recruitment success. I can’t elaborate in much detail here at the moment as I’m away in Australia using a dopey IPad and it’s just too hard – but I’ll post properly next week when I’m back home.
hereticaMemberOkay, all sorted. You have to log in first then go to subscriptions otherwise the options don’t come up properly.
Yay!hereticaMemberTrying…
hereticaMemberI posted it because I was really disappointed to see it. And annoyed. Reduces all the hard work we do to some kind of personality cult.
hereticaMemberI think its an amazing approach. Like very much.
hereticaMemberWill email my thoughts also.
hereticaMemberChris – I’ve been trying to recover from injury myself, its taken ages and just when you think you’ve got it beat, something else comes out of the woodwork. Its a bastard to be frank. We refuse to give up! Wish you the very best on this venture.
hereticaMemberBen and I had a look through these tonight, fascinating and enlightening. Rare to see a dissection/demonstration of principles at this kind of level. Looking forward to hearing about it all and getting a little flow-down benefit. 🙂
hereticaMemberMore great clips. I would love to develop some flow drills based on the movements in the last one.
hereticaMemberGreat clips.
